Recently I purchased an iPod Touch, specifically to design Pages templates and Keynote themes for use with the device.

Imagine being able to run a slide show from your pocket as a quicktime movie, and being able to use the device to scroll your way through it (or play it out through the TV)

Not only that, but imagine being able to open a PDF file for reading on your ipod or iphone. Emailing, and possibly editing it if you need to change it.

Sadly my expectations of the device were not quite up to what it is capable of. You cannot actually upload anything to it. Movies you can, so the keynote capability is there, but you cannot save a pdf to it, nor can you save a web archive of a site you have visited. I consider that a rather glaring error on the part of Apple, but it may be something which is updated through updates as the operating system on these devices matures.

What I would like to see for this device is a program for entering text, either as files or as notes. A version of Macjournal, capable of uploading to different journals or maintaining a private journal would be a true asset. As well, being able to enter calendar information would be an incredible asset. Why that would be missing is beyond me.

When syncing photos with the ipod touch, you can only select aperture libraries or iphoto ones. You cannot select photos from both. I find that to be rather frustrating as I have photos I want to use from both.

It should be able to use the camera connector to download and display photographs. There should be some limnited editing functionality as well. Right now the camera connector does not work at all. That’s bad.

I want to have the ability to have my weather show up as a dashboard widget. I’m sure there will be a few more things that I think up later, but for now this device seems somewhat crippled for what it should be able to do. I would like to believe Apple will release updates to it’s functionality, or I bought a white elephant.

I started attending college a few weeks ago, concentrating on Drawing and painting with a smattering of photography in there as well. My goal had been to have several products and projects online before then. Sadly things didn’t work out as planned, but now that should change.

I have purchased a few items to make my development easier and quicker. Chief among these purchases was a new laptop. As well for development I had bought a DSLR and several lenses. For testing I have a new double sided printer, ipod movie and soon an ipod touch.

I am still waiting (im)patiently for Apple to release a tablet computer, and of course we are all waiting for Leopard to wipe the floor with Vista. For now, though, I intend to discover how useful Pages development is with an ipod touch. Something tels me that the itouch thing and how it behaves will be the next step in user interface and information display.

Besides, having one of the itouches will be a damned interesting experience. I can finally show off my photos in a truly unique form factor. I just hope I can imply some of the elegance ofo the old keynote themes within such a tiny form factor.

I am in the middle of several fluxes, but there are updates coming for a few of my old themes. First up is redoing the Magnetic Album. I created Magnetic with the intention of replicating the old peel-and-place photo albums in a Keyntoe format. With the new Frames and Placeholders for text and pho9tographs the creation and maintenance of such a theme will be much easier. The original frames will still be there, but you will be able to scale things much easier than before.

For those that are curious, the things blocking my creativity right now are a move of my old studio stuff from one storage space to another, heavy duty dental work (6 root canals and crowns) starting School in September, and working full time throughout. School is art-related, concentrating on photography and design/fine art, and I can’t wait. But expect a few delays. This summer was quite busy with a move from one Alberta city to another, and a new job thrown in to boot.

I was playing with numbers, seeing if it could do some of the stuff I was couunting on with an imaginary Database program Apple has yet to develop.

You see, a long time ago I imagined a database program along the same vein as Keynote. A series of reccipe cards much like each of the slides in keynote. You build a Master Entry of the information, and then use a series of Master slides to show you a composition of the information the way you want. So you have your address book, but can displlay the informaton with all the bells and whistles of pages, Keynote and now, Numbers.

My goal with playing with Numbers was to see if I could figure out a way to make a spreadsheet that looked more appropriate to the Pages and Keynote paradigm. So things would look unlike any spreadsheet Excel could create.

That’s where the Collector Newsletter came in. It’s aproject I am working on. There’s no concievable reason that a spreadsheet couldn’t incorporate other elements of a media rich environment. I’m not sure how useful this will be, but if Apple sees fit to release a Database in the same format as the Spreadsheet program, I can see it freeing a lot of people from the “boring collection of useless information” concept that all other forms of databases have given us.

Of course, none of this would be possible if Apple hadn’t shown us the importance of information and how important accessing it easily can free us from the hassle of organizing it. I’m talking about Spotlight.

right now Spotlight will let you have access to inforation, but only information that is organized by Apples’ criteria. What if you could build a database using the smarts behind Spotlight?

I know, it’s a long shot, but it could be the next big thing. It’s unknown until we see it from Apple, and I hope they do it right. An iwork designed database could be the consumer equivalent of Filemaker the same way iPhoto is the consumer equivalent of Aperture.

It’s just an idea. We’ll see what ‘09 brings.

Apple has done several things to minimize the space needed in the iWork programs. It used to be that for every language you would need a new theme for Keynote, or template for pages. Not only that but each language had to have an Metric and Imperial version for pages templates. And each of these themes and templates needed to have a separate collection of graphics.

Not so anymore. For each template inn Pages you will find that the Metric and Imperial versions are separate XML files (which holds all the placement and such information) inside the template. In terms of the Keynote themes you will find the Apple ones have a huge Shared folder of resources available for graphics. And you wlil also find that there are nicer graphics used in the Page Layout version of templates for Pages.

Things are looking up for designers. No more having to have a separate version of all my files for sale, one for Metric and one for Imperial. Far easier (I think) from a designers point of view.
